Connectivity and Local Tech Growth
Charlotte counts over 50,000 tech professionals as of 2025 with an average salary of $97,044. The city ranks as the nation’s second-largest banking center, drawing demand for fintech, AI, security and compliance roles. City Programs Expanding Reach
The City of Charlotte’s Access Charlotte pilot, backed by $10 million in digital inclusion grants, supplies free in-home internet to over 8,600 households via a Spectrum partnership that continues through January 2026. Smart Charlotte, launched in 2020 and expanded in late 2021, addresses internet access alongside resident-centered tech solutions. In 2025 the city deployed roughly 30 interactive smart kiosks offering free public Wi-Fi and transit information across commercial corridors.
Microsoft and the city maintain a three-year partnership focused on IoT and STEM workforce development. Charlotte was named a 2026 IDC Smart Cities North America Awards finalist and a 2025 Digital Inclusion Trailblazer.
